Study Abroad: Sociology of Turkey - June 17-July 7, 2013

Dear all,

My colleagues and I are organizing a Study Abroad Course to Turkey: Sociology of Turkey: A Non-Orientalist Approach to Turkey and Turkish Society - June 17-July 7, 2013.

This 6-credit, four-week course (INTL 499: Senior International Experience) will include lectures by well-known scholars on Turkish history, politics, society, and economics in the morning; while the afternoons will include visits to historical sites, museums, other relevant locations in Istanbul, or to meet with government officials, political and religious leaders, and business organizations.

Lodging will be at a hotel in Uskudar, which is conveniently located next to a ferry station. Students will attend class lectures and discussions from 9 to 12PM Monday through Fridays at the Institute of Middle East at Marmara University. We will spend two weeks in Istanbul and one week travelling in Ankara, Konya, Gocek, Izmir and Canakkale. Turkey has a population of more than 70 million and is one of the most diverse countries in the Middle East, at the intersection of Europe and Asia, with many different political, religious and ethnic groups. Over the last decade the Turkish economy has been one of the greatest examples of growth in a developing market, and this has fueled important social and political changes. In this course, we seek to understand and explore these trends in Turkish society.

This study abroad course is designed in collaboration with the Institute of Middle East at Marmara University and cosponsored by the Center for Turkish Studies at PSU. All applicants will be interviewed either by phone or Skype.

The Program Fee is $3,100—$3800 depending on student enrollment, and includes tuition/ fees, accommodations, breakfast, and local transportation. Additional student expenses not included are airfare, visa fees, and personal expenses.

This class is not a touristic course about belly dancing nor whirling dervishes. This study abroad course is about hard core Turkish Politics and Society from an insider and Non-Orientalist perspective. If you would like to learn about Turkish political parties (AK Parti, CHP, MHP, Isci Partisi, Saadet Partisi, TKP, Yesiller Partisi, BDP, Ulku Ocaklari), religious organizations (Cemevleri, Alevi Foundations, Tarikats-Zikirler) , think-tanks, the educational system, we strongly recommend you to take this study abroad to Turkey course. You will not stay an isolated five stars hotels or university dorms in the middle of nowhere. You will stay in the historical neighborhood of Uskudar on the Asian side of the city, living within Turkish society and learning about Turkish Transformational Politics . The experience will expand your understanding of modern Turkey in the context of globalization, the economy, Islam and the Middle East.
